How to Shred Chicken in a Stand Mixer

Most people used to and still do shred chicken with a fork. But this may end up taking a lot of time, and if the chicken isn’t tender enough, you may not get small rough pieces. A stand mixer makes this job so much easier. You can use the shredded chicken for tacos, salads, sandwiches, or pasta dishes. Here’s a guide on how to.

Here’s what you’ll need

  • Stand mixer with a paddle attachment
  • Cooked chicken
  • Mixing bowl

Step 1: Cook the Chicken First

You can use baked, boiled, or slow-cooked chicken. Remove all the bones and let the chicken cool down till it’s warm. Cold chicken won’t shred as well. You’ll end up with chunks instead of shreds.

Step 2: Place the Chicken in the Mixer

Tear the chicken roughly into large chunks and toss it directly into the mixing bowl. Fix the paddle attachment to your stand mixer.

Step 3: Mix on Low Speed

Start the mixer on low speed (setting 1 or 2). Let it run for about 15–30 seconds, or until you see the chicken breaking down into shreds. Stop the mixer and check the chicken. If the pieces are too big, scrape down the mixing bowl and run the mixer for another 10–15 seconds. You’re all done!

Helpful Tips

  • Keep an eye on the chicken. Mix for too long and you’ll end up with a chicken paste.
  • Add sauces or seasonings once the chicken is shredded for flavor.

Note

You can refrigerate the chicken for up to 4 days. You can freeze it for up to 3 months. Store in an airtight container.

Can I use frozen chicken to shred in a stand mixer?

Nope, frozen chicken is too hard, and your mixer won’t be able to shred it properly. Let it thaw first.

What if I only have a hand mixer?

You can use a hand mixer, too! Just place the cooked chicken in a large, deep bowl and mix on low speed. It might take a little longer, but it will work just as well.

How much chicken can I shred at once?

Usually, 2–3 chicken breasts work best. If you overload the bowl, the mixer won’t shred evenly. If you have more chicken, shred in batches.

What kind of chicken works best?

Boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs are perfect. They’re easy to shred If you’re using bone-in chicken, remove the bones and skin.

Summary

That’s it! In less than a minute, you’ve got perfectly shredded chicken without the arm workout.
